"Ticonderoga" is a Mohawk word meaning "the land between two waters" (Lake Champlain and Lake George). This strategic point lay at one end of the portage linking the two lakes, part of a great water highway binding New York and Montreal. Here was won the greatest French victory of the French and Indian War. A generation later, the first American victory of the Revolution was won here by Ethan Allen, Benedict Arnold, and the Green Mountain Boys. Six times in two wars in just a generation, the Fort was attacked. Thrice it held, thrice it fell. Today, Fort Ticonderoga is one of the most significant historic sites in northern New York with a museum of 30,000+ artifacts, a research collection of 12,000 rare books and manuscripts and over 2000 acres of unspoiled American landscape.
